I saw all the comments about it and relating it to the actress Gomez and the Latino singer, who unfortunately, was tragically killed at such a young age. Anyway, my name is Selena and I have been having it for 53 yrs, way before them. I love my name, it is unique, and I love its Greek origin and meaning which means moon. It is has an expression meaning of - a countenance like the sun. Personality meaning of - has a good dash of originality. Natural meaning of - is gentle and loving. Emotional meaning of - someone with love-filled eyes. Character meaning of - a defender of truth and right. Physical meaning of - a smile that lights up everyone's world. A mental meaning of - is idealistic and imaginative in nature. And finally a motivation meaning of - virtue, etiquette, good behavior. I love what my name means and majority of it is so applicable to how I am, still trying to get that etiquette part. I believe you establish your child's destiny by their name so know what a name means before naming your child. I named my daughter Cherish which means love and Iesha which means life. Both are blessing me by living up to their name, Cherish loving people, seeing no enemy and Iesha living life to the fullest, hiking mountains and enjoying what life has to offer. She is not at all like the American singer/actress Selena Gomez.. she's quite a bossy-boots and has a domineering presence, not very Disney-like haha, but she is a great listener and has your back. The only thing she has in common with Gomez is that she is also very pretty. Apparently it means moon. Similar name to Selena is Celeste which also means moon.
原When I was growing up I knew a few Celina's but they were all hispanic and spelled it CELINA (with the 'C'), not Selena. I even had a teacher named Celina and she was an older lady in her 60's. It was like the names Cecilia, Celeste, Celina... I always thought of it with a 'C'. After the singer died, though, it just boomed and everyone wanted to spell it like her. The 'S' spelling is pretty much all I ever see now. Amazing how this name just skyrocketed in the latino community after Selena Quintanilla's death (and she was a year younger than me, so we were of the same generation).
The name is very pretty and I like it but I'm not a big fan of Selena Gomez and unfortunately, I think the name is so closely associated with her too. Pretty ironic how Selena Gomez (a native Texan herself) has said on TV that she was named after Selena the singer. It's a 'singer' name to me.. lol

原I don't like the name Selena, I just don't feel comfortable with any pronunciation I can think of and it sounds broken. But ever since I saw the movie "Arthur and the Invisibles" I have always loved the name Selenia. I sounds more feminine and has a nice flow to it. I pronounce it Suh-Le-Nee-Ah. The "Uh" in "Suh" is very short and "Le" as in "Let". It makes me think of a bright flower instead of a moon though.
原This is my name, it is Greek not Spanish or Russian. I know a lot of people think of it as a Mexican name because of the famous Tejano singer, but it's not. If anything, it was odd for her to have a first name that was not Spanish or Mexican.
