原This is my name and I spell mine like this 'Joakin'. People don't even know my other names. I am from Nigeria and the name isn't that common here and that's why I love the name so much. It's unique.
原Somebody mentioned that Joaquin Phoenix's name used to be Leaf - that's true, but Joaquin is in fact his birth name. He went by Leaf as a child because he wanted a nature/hippie name like his siblings River, Rain, Liberty and Summer. As a teenager, he decided to go back to being called Joaquin. I associate this name primarily with him, and it's an association that's gone downhill a little since his whole staged "breakdown" a few years ago (which turned out to be faked for a pseudo-documentary).
原First I REALLY liked this name, I always heard it being pronounced as YO-AA-KEEN in my country, Then when I've heard the official pronunciation is hwah-keen I absolutely loathe it.
原After reading the comments this name makes so much more sense! I always thought it was a female name, pronounced JO-uh-kwin, because I'd only seen it in movie credits, etc. Where neither the gender or pronunciation are apparent. When I read someone's comment that said that it's pronounced hwah-KEEN, I thought "Wow! So this is how hwah-KEEN is spelled!" I'd only ever heard the name Joaquin, apparently, but had never seen the person's name written.

原Hi! I'm from Argentina and I am an English teacher, so actually the phonetic symbol for the very first letter is "x", not common in English, but in Spanish. That's the reason why it's difficult for some to pronounce; I don't think people name their children with this name after J Phoenix, because it is used a lot in Spain and Latin countries. I named my son Joaquin, but he is called by his middle name at kinder, because there are two other boys named Joaquin. I chose it because it's a Spanish name and we are Spanish descendants, but his middle name is from Arabian origin.
原Joaquin pronounced wa-kquin means god will establish. It is a family name passed on about 9 generations, from what I can verify. I was told it was derived from the Ladino or Iberic culture. The name is a run off of what God would establish: Jachin pronounced wa-kquin, one of the two pillars entering the temple Solomon built. Have you guys herd of the Ladino culture before Spain in Iberia?

原Jack is supposed to be a pet form of John but I've also heard it being used as a pet form of James and Jacob. I have no idea how to pronounce this name so I would never use it because I think other people whould have the same problem.
