原I am Jewish and this name (usually rendered "Dinah") is pronounced DEE-nə (Dee-nuh), which is also the Biblically accurate pronunciation-- not DIE-nuh. It derives from the legal court system (Beit Din:בית דין, "house of judgment"; which is a rabbinical court of Judaism.)
原I have a friend named "Dinah," but she spells it Dhana. She was named after a midwife. In Sanskrit, I believe Dhana translates into something involving treasures, wealth, or riches. I think it also has something to do with seven principles in Buddhist suttas. Beautiful and complex.
原It should be pronounced Dee-Nah, not Dye-Nah, or else it would be awful. Sounds a bit modern, though it may be a bit common, but not in my opinion. I find it a calmly bold, sophisticated name that pleases the senses if you know what I mean. Simply nice.
原Just wanted to say, I don't think the boys are going to sing "Dinah, won't you blow" to a girl named Dinah, as hardly any young person knows that song... especially boys who would do such a thing in the first place. It's more likely to get connected with Dinah the kitten from Alice in Wonderland, as many more kids will have seen the Disney movie than heard that old song.
