原I named my daughter Kenna. I was looking for something different. I had already named her older sister Keelin, so I couldn't give her a common/popular name. I settled on Kenna and I love the name.
She is pretty sensitive about people assuming she is a McKenna or MaKenna - she will flat out say there is no "Mc" or "Ma" in front of her name - lol.
I had never heard or known anyone with the name before I named my daughter, although, about 9 months after her birth, there was a tropical storm named "Kenna". I thought that was very interesting.
Her sister and friends tend to call her "Ken". Her sister has also used the nicknames "Kenny" and "Kendra". Lol Seriously, I thought I chose names where nicknames weren't needed, but I guess I was wrong. :)

原It just doesn't sound right to me. On the one hand, it sounds like Ken with an 'a' added to it. On the other hand, it sounds like one of these tacky names that sound strange on grown-ups. The name simply lacks all beauty and sophistication.
原I just remembered some funny things my daughter, Kenna, has said in her life about her name. In my first memory, when she was about 4 or 5, she's strapped in her carseat going down a country road with me in the car. We passed a freshly harvested cornfield where about a thousand migrating geese were foraging for food. Kenna hollered, "Wazzat?!" I answered, "Geese, honey, those are Canada geese." Silence. Then in a sing-song voice, Kenna started chanting, basically to herself, "Kenna da geese, Mommy da geese, Daddy da geese." I was so overwhelmed with laughter, I had to pull the car over and get my breath back. Funny baby! Well, to this day she is Kenna-da-goose!
The other memory I have was when Kenna was in the 1st or 2nd grade. She came home one day from school looking very introspective. When I asked her what was on her mind, she said, "Mommy, why did you name me after a President who got his brains shot?" I was stunned and bewildered! "What? What do you mean?" "Well, on my cubby at school, there's a card with my first name and last name initial on it and today we learned about President Kennedy." Our last name starts with "D". "Kenna D." Poor kid! Well, since then, she's actually used it to her advantage. When people are one-upping each other at a party or something, Kenna spouts, "Well, I'M a Kennedy!" Funny!
原My daughter's name is Kenna, and yes, she was named after my father, Kenneth. At the time, I thought I had made up the name. As I read the postings from ALL THE OTHER KENNAS I have to think you're all not as alone as you thought you were! In our experience though, we've only met one other Kenna and she was a Dutch stewardess. Random, huh? Anyway, we have since found references for Kenna in Scandanavian and Irish. One meant "fire spirit" and the other meant "beloved" (as in the Eng word, "ken"). My Kenna doesn't get the "McKenna" thing too much but she does get asked if she was named after a country in Africa! No biggie. Mostly, her name fits her and she is a vibrant, artistic, spunky, self-possessed young woman (born in '84). It's a pretty name and we all still really love it.
原I didn't like having this name as a kid because no one else did, and I wanted to have a name buddy too. :( But I got over it. It still makes me really, really angry, though, when people ask me if my name is short for McKenna.
