原We named our daughter Caoilfhionn, however, we spelled it Kyllan. Yes, we had to repeat her name several times and disagree with people when they suggested we meant Kelly, Kaylee, etc. We think it is a beautiful name and also like the meaning. My husband has a cousin with that name and we were told it meant either fierce warrior or beautiful warrior. I just now discovered a different meaning as there was no way to look it up at the time. She is a beautiful woman with porcelain skin and definitely a take no prisoner attitude. Not a drop of Irish blood in us to our knowledge.
原This is my legal name and it's a pain for other people to spell or pronounce. I'm in America where names are socially required to be something simple: Mary, Elizabeth, Brittney, Christina etc. It's very frustrating to have a name that ties me to my family heritage but gets comments like "Weird name" "where do you get that?" "You're making that name up. Let me see your ID." I love the name but there are many cons to it. Adults are little better than children when it comes to names. I've been told that the reason I didn't get a job was because they couldn't pronounce my name and they laughed about it. It's not worth the frustration. Please don't name your child this. I've tried going by Keylee and it's no better. Somehow or another, people think I'm supposed to be called Kaylee or Kyleigh. Cute, but not my name.
原I find it strange that people seem to think Caoilfhionn has a "difficult" spelling. It's just two of the most basic Irish vocabulary words, caol (slender) and fhionn (white) put together, with an extra "i" to make it correct by spelling rules. What is so "difficult" about that?
原Gee, who other than an expert on Irish culture would figure that this name was pronounced "KEE-lin"? It's probably the most hideous Irish name after Toirdhealbhach in my opinion.
原This name is so beautiful! I've been in love with it all my life. Caoilfhionn is one of my favourites, and the meaning is so literal. Very Irish (I'm Irish!). That's what we like to do - add a bunch of extra vowels that we have no intention of pronouncing. Anyway, I think it's a very pretty name. It sounds so sweet and beautiful. :)
原My name is Caoilfhionn and even though it is hard to pronounce everyone seems to love it. The pronunciation isn't that hard but people are wary of the spelling. Again it is not said like Keelen it is much broader. I work with people from many different parts of the world and they are all able to pronounce it perfect but if I wrote it out for them they get confused.

原Such a beautiful name and I would consider naming one of my children this definitely. But the thing is even in Ireland there are problems with the spelling and pronunciation so I think whereever you are you'll run into problems with it.

Her second daughter is named Seosaimhín (pronounced like Josephine), although she hasn't any Irish origin. In school the girls are just called Kel and Jo, even on her reports they're named Keelin and Josephine. I think names shouldn't be too exotic (especially when their family name is "Wagner", one of the most common German family names).
