The name Maria is given as a second name to boys by catholic parents in Germany (Famous bearers: the poet Rainer Maria Rilke, the composer Carl Maria von Weber) and Spain (stereotypically José Maria). Thus, it is indeed kind of unisex, though I have not heard of boys or men bearing Maria as the first given name.

原Living in the US it's usually thought of as being Mexican but I like to think of the Latin and European origins. As a Catholic it's made me feel particularly attached to the Virgin Mary (since Mary and Maria mean the same thing) I can't imagine having a different name. I've only come across a few women with the same name, most of them were much older than me. I've never had another child in my class with this name. The only bad thing is having people sing whenever they see you or thinking that Marie and Mimi are acceptable alternatives.
