原In ancient Egyptian the word for magic is pronounced 'heca,' and the feminine suffix is 't' or 'et'. For an example take the Egyptian goddess Bast. Her name is sometimes written as Bastet to clarify that she is female. I wonder if 'Hecate' is derived from this root, perhaps adopted by the Greeks from the Egyptians.
原I love this name! I used it for a character in a Harry Potter fanfiction I'm writing. It's very pretty in my opinion, though I don't think I'd name my daughter this. A little too obscure.
原This has been one of my favorite names for a long time! I have a thing for dark goddesses. They're amazing. In my novel, the main character's name is "Hekate" and I changed the pronunciation to "Heck-tay". Kinda silly but it fits the character.
原This name is mentioned several times as a Goddess of Darkness, but a force of good, in the series Daughters of the Moon by Lynne Ewing, spelled as Hekate.
Funny that you mention a good nickname would be Catty, as one of the characters in the series is named Catty.
原I love the name Hecate but I would pronounce it heck-it, regardless. If it was pronounced He-ka-tee or however, she might be called Katy or Catty and though Katy is a cute nickname, I would hate that.

原Hekate was most likely originally from the Carians of Asia Minor, and came to Greece in the 6th century BCE. An alternative explanation is that Hekate evolved from the Egyptian midwife goddess Heqit, (alternatively spelled Heket or Hekat) her name related to "heq," the matriarch and wise woman of the tribe. (http://www.goddessmystic.com/CoreCurriculum/Goddesses/Hekate/index.shtml)
原Goddess of the New Moon, often looked at as evil but one sometimes needs to go through the Darkness in order to find the Light.
I was an avid reader of Greek and Roman myths when I was little, but I often pronounced the names wrong. Once again, I'm shocked at the proper pronouncation. I always read it as "hek-KATE", but HEK-a-tee sound much more friendly, not sure how I feel on it though. A bit too friendly, perhaps, for a dark goddess.
原I love this name, it's so unique but I don't know if I, or anyone, should name a child this. It sounds better for a cat, like a familiar to the "witchy" name.

译 在古埃及,魔术的字发音为“heca”,女性的后缀是“t”或“et”。举一个例子,埃及女神巴斯特。她的名字有时写成Bastet,以澄清她是女性。我不知道'Hecate'是从这根根派生的,也许是由埃及人的希腊人采纳的。
