原My daughter's name is Sarai, pronounced suh-RYE. I saw it written in the bible and that's how I pronounced it, and no one corrected me. I always thought it was pretty when I was a teen, and decided that my first daughter (if I had kids) would be named Sarai.
原I prefer this to the less common Sarah, as you hear it less and it still has Biblical roots and meaning. If you like Sarah, but want something less common, this is a great alternative.

She had 3 names in her lifetime; Yescah as a child, which means "to see/gaze upon", Sarai which she changed to once she was older during a spiritual refinement, & Sarah, the name given to her by God. Sarai was known for her prophecy, her astounding beauty, kindness, purity, and loyalty to God. She was also a role model to mothers during and well beyond her time. Sarai/Sarah was truly blessed with many miracles by God during her lifetime; one being the ability to give birth to her only son Isaac, pain free, at the age of 90yrs old after believing to be unable to bear children for many years. 原Wow, I didn't know this was a real name. I know someone with this name, and I always thought her parents made it up as a "creative" form of Sarah or something. I honestly don't know how she pronounces it, because most teachers say it like Sarah E, and she says that it's correct. It sounds really ridiculous to be honest, I'm pretty sure it's more like Sair-eye, which sounds pretty cool.
原I can't say I like this name. The questionable meaning solidifies my feeling. Singer Brandy Norwood has a daughter named Sarai, but she spells it Sy'rai. Norwood's spelling is a bit more updated and less boring. IMO.
原In "The Five Books of Moses: A Translation with Commentary", which is the Torah translated into English by Robert Alter, the commentary offers another explanation to the origin of the name Sarai, other than the possible meaning of "contentious". "The only difference between Sarai and Sarah is that the former reflects an archaic feminine suffix, the latter, the normative feminine suffix: both versions of the name mean "princess"". Robert Alter is a professor of the Hebrew language so his interpretation of the name is likely to be accurate. [noted -ed]
