The "-roid" reminds me of "steroid," though-- but I doubt that would occur to most. I don't think that it is enough of a concern, anyway, to discourage someone from using it.
原Actually the name is generally used in Ireland as the equivalent of Gerard (popular in Ireland because of St Gerard Majella who is patron saint of expectant women). Gerald is comparatively rare in Ireland. [noted -ed]
